Quick and Healthy Snacks and Desserts

A stroll down the aisles of a supermarket will reveal a host of quick and easy snacks and desserts. You might wonder, then, what’s the point of making them at home? Indeed, there will be times when the supermarket snack will be the best, or easiest option, but making your own at home has some advantages, especially for people who have undergone gastric or bariatric surgery and have to eat in small portions.

Many of the snacks you’ll find in the supermarket are filling and tasty, but, generally being high in fat, salt, sugar and other additives, consist of what we can call ’empty calories’, and might displace a more nutritious snack. When you make your own, you can control how much fat, sugar or salt you add, and choose which additives you want. You can also be sure you’re eating real food, rather than artificial approximations.

There are indeed a wide range of snacks in the supermarket, but if you bought all the snacks you fancy, you’ll be spending a lot of money and ending up with a pantry full of packets you might never get around to using. When you make your own at home, you can use pantry staples that you can use in many different ways, thus avoiding unnecessary spending, and you can have whatever variety of snack you fancy, when you fancy it.

And last of all, making your own snacks at home can be enjoyable, and not at all difficult.

You’ll find a wide variety of snacks in this section ranging from the savoury to the sweet, suitable for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dessert or a late-night top up. They would also make healthy small meals for anyone still recovering from surgery or with very limited stomach capacity. Most of the recipes can also be made entirely from Pantry Essential

As well as the following recipe collections, you’ll also find many tasty snacks in the Fast Eggs section.
